In the first presentation our speaker, Victoria Cervantes, gave an overview of the first 300 years:The Americas before the European invasion, early colonialism and the extraction and exploitation of the land and its people quickly ensued. (Click here to view the video of the first presentation)
In the second part Ms Cervantes will be joined by David Swanson. Together they will discuss the history of the Monroe Doctrine, what is being referred to as the “Donroe Doctrine”, the 2026 National Security Plan and the Shield of the Americas. We will also cover the history of and the current, on-going resistance to U.S. imperialism in the region and explore ideas for what we can do in solidarity with our neighbors to the south.
Victoria Cervantes is a longtime activist for social justice and in solidarity with Latin American movements against U.S. imperialism. A member of La Voz de los de Abajo Chicago and Co- coordinator of the Honduras Solidarity Network. She is allso a member of Chicago Committee Against War and Racism (CCAWR)
David Swanson is the Executive Director of World BEYOND War and is the author of numerous books including, The Monroe Doctrine at 200 and What to Replace it With (2023), War in Never Just (2016), War No More: The Case for Abolition (2013), When the World Outlawed War (2011), War Is a Lie (2010) and Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union(2009)
